Green Cleaning Products - News from the Environmental Protection Agency

Green cleaning products are getting more and more attention as consumers are becoming aware the of the dangers in our trusted and traditional household cleaners which, as confirmed by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) may be classified as hazardous and contain chemicals associated with eye, skin, or respiratory irritation, or other human health issues.

Non-green cleaning products contain toxins that are released to your indoor home environment not only during normal use, but also as they are stored in your cabinets. So, this means that even if you have them locked away so that your kids can't come into direct contact with them, they are still being affected by them. What risks are they, and you, the one who actually uses these products, incurring?

Just some of the problems linked to the toxic chemicals in non-green cleaning products include heart conditions, blood cell damage, chemical pneumonia, asthma, headaches, nasal ulcerations, lung damage, tissue damage, reproductive toxicity, allergies, nausea, chronic eye problems, dermatitis, liver disease, cancer, kidney disease, bone marrow damage, and more.

That's the bad news. The good news is that there are now several alternative green cleaning products that you can use in your home. The bad news again is that all cleaners now claim to be green, because a real definition of what constitutes a green cleaning product has not been offered. And, even worse, there are no certifications required to prove that a company's products is really a green cleaning product. However, you can look for the Green Seal logo if you want a guarantee. Green Seal has been around since way before most of us caught on to the green cleaning movement and they put submitted products through rigorous tests before they will deem them genuinely green.

It is expected that the FTC is soon coming out with more laws that will make it easier for the consumer to know whether he or she is really buying green cleaning products or just the same old toxic cleaning products that have been slapped with a green label. Until then, do your research before you buy green cleaning products.

You are correct in trying to raise awareness of the danger of all of these chemicals in our lives. It is no wonder that people are suffering more and more allergies not to mention worse...

There's far to many chemicals in household products. But i guess that's the price we pay for convenience products and a more efficient lifestyle. Nics post.

But the links between these chemicals and illnesses like asthma, heart disease and liver damage is tenuous. These chemicals are everywhere there's no way to really avoid them is there?

You're right Catherine, but the dangers when the chemicals are stored in small indoor spaces are worse. Indoor pollution is a much bigger problem than most of us realize, and your choices in cleaning products, and personal care products, make a huge difference!
